Electronic Dance Music (EDM) - An Umbrella Term For More Than One genre
Electronic dance music is also known as club music, rave music, or just dance, and is a broad category of percussive musical genres developed mostly for nightclubs, parties, and raves.edm The term "dance music" itself may evoke many images, from flashing lights and vibrant, pulsating beats to soothing, low-key tracks, played to a gently rhythm by an unseen dancer.edm The truth is that electronic dance music is much more than the stereotype does. It can be a style of music that is fun and exciting for dancing and listening to, as well as a powerful and distinctive form of music for live performances. It can also incorporate elements of other styles into its foundation, which will make any song a potential candidate for inclusion in an electronic dance mix.
There are many genres of electronic dance music that artists interested in DJing can choose from, but the most popular and widely performed forms are those that are considered to be "club music.edm edm " These are songs with drums and bass included, but who have been heavily promoted as being able to provide the "Feel Good" Music Club atmosphere that many clubbers love.edm Two of the most popular and influential sets of EDM that have emerged over the past few years have been artists like Disclosure and Carl Cox, who have turned their innovative drum programming into some of the most recognizable rhythms in modern club culture.
House music and hip-hop are two other categories that frequently find themselves lumped together, but they are very different animal varieties, with vastly different sound elements, mechanics, and impact.edm edm While both of these styles can be highly hypnotic and captivating to the ears, they each have their own individual characteristics and qualities that set them apart. Hip-hop, for instance, is a tightly packed and highly rhythmic collection of songs that features a single bass drum, three to five main drum pads, a handful of signature instruments, and plenty of fills and cymbals to create tension and drive the rhythm. It's a style that often comes off as being abrasive and somewhat politically correct in its references to women.
House music is often much more compacted and focused, with fewer numbers of percussion instruments and a focus on the lead vocalist.edm edm The songs tend to be slower and more melodic than their hip-hop cousins, and are also known to be less "edgy" and "nervous" (due to the fact that house music tends to be less adventurous and stylistically less divergent than its progenitor), although it is also not immune to becoming "edy." Most house songs tend to have a relatively simple structure, using repeating chord tones (and minor and major seventh chords as well) and/or a simple pattern of drums and bass/drum sticks. Although it shares some of the characteristics of djm, it generally does not carry the edm aesthetic.
Finally, yet surprisingly, there is another new and seemingly forgotten form of EDM that has recently come into prominence: dance pop.edm edm Unlike other genres of electronic dance music (such as dubstep and techno), this style of music tends to be quite upfront and less subtle, featuring loud chugs and drum hits. As such, it tends to get passed over by listeners who are looking for a gentler, more relaxing experience. But dance pop music has recently begun to feature heavily in mainstream pop radio, due to stars like Rihanna and Lady Ga who have released their own dance singles in recent years. In turn, the styles and sound of both pop and dance are beginning to merge, resulting in EDM that could eventually challenge the dominance of djm.
Undoubtedly, there are many more music genres within which djm falls, but the above list serves to highlight how influential it has become in today's electronic dance music scene.edm edm Despite its relative newcomers status, it already appears to be challenging the dominance of djm. If further proof is needed, just look at what happened when Disclosure released their first album, Collision Course, in 2021. This British band quickly achieved a following for their electro DJs, and their recordings soon went straight up the charts, proving the point that you don't need to be the biggest name in your genre to have a major impact on the industry.
