Laser Engraving Machine

A laser engraving machine (or Laser etching machine as it's also known) is an electronic device used for laser-induced engravings on specific target materials such as ceramics, wood, glass, plastic or even mirrors. Basically, it's a tool that makes use of an intense beam of laser light to engrave or print on a surface, much like a pen. While these kinds of engravings have been in use for decades, today's laser etching machines are much more advanced than those of the past. With advances in material and technology, these machines are now capable of engraving on all kinds of materials, including metal, glass and even soft paper.

A laser engraving machine usually consists of three major components: a laser, a computer-controlled unit, and a monitor. The laser engraving machine itself consists of a special laser source, a hand wheel, and a monitor. The laser source can either be directed by a computer through a computer connected to the laser etching machines power or through a laser pointer. Either way, these machines typically work with gas (oxygen, nitrogen or oxygen) driven lasers.

The hand wheel or a rotary tool is used to control the laser beam, which is emitted by the laser source. The scan tool, which may be used simultaneously with the hand wheel or by itself if necessary, is used to collect the image after it is engraved. Some laser engraving machines can be configured to perform different scan and engraving operations, like stamping logos on plastics or into hardwood veneer.

Laser markings are typically made on a flat surface, such as plastic or metal. There are various industries that use laser markings, mostly for decorative purposes. One obvious use is to create intricate designs on different metals and plastics, usually on metal items like handles, table legs, etc. Other examples include laser markings on metal parts of boats and airplanes to add details or to match with the original paint color. This technology is increasingly being applied in the automotive and industrial industries to add details and make branding easier for consumers.

The computer-controlled machine operates using a computer database that stores the file that is to be marked, typically the design file of the product or logo. When the trigger is released, the machine applies a small burst of laser power, which heats the material surface to create a vapor, which then causes the raised image of the design file to fluoresce. This process of heating is called cavitation, which is used to create a frosted look on the surface of the material. The cooled vapors of cavitation return to the laser engraving machine and the cycle begins all over again.

Industries that have applied laser technology in their product marketing and promotional processes include woodworking, metal work, metal production, automobiles, and medical practices. These applications are seeing increased production because of the speed of the machine, less time spent on labor and personnel, and consistency of the engravings. Another reason for the rising popularity of laser technology is because of the cost of using it, which is much lower than other methods, like stone, ceramic, or wood carving. However, there are still many hurdles to overcome before this technology is widely used in product marketing, but the sky is the limit.
